Expressing Your Sexuality

français»

How you express your sexuality is influenced by your beliefs, attitudes, and experiences as well as cultural, spiritual, moral and ethical considerations. Sexuality involves more than just sexual contact. We are all sexual beings from birth.

Whether you are sexually active or not, you possess a gender identity, a sexual orientation, fantasies, feelings of attraction, a personal body image, a need for intimacy, and a set of values, attitudes and beliefs that guide your choices. Choosing to abstain from or engage in sexual activity is a personal choice and both are ways of expressing your sexuality.

Healthy sexuality

Healthy sexuality is an important aspect of your health and well-being. It is more than avoiding sexually transmitted infections or unplanned pregnancy. Healthy sexuality is about the range of factors that affect your overall health and well-being as well as your sexual health.

Healthy sexuality can include:
  • maintaining your physical health (proper nutrition, exercise, and seeking medical attention when and where necessary)
  • engaging in healthy relationships based on mutual consent, respect, understanding, and open communication
  • building your sexual self-awareness (understanding of yourself as a sexual being, which can include considerations such as gender identity, sexual orientation, body image, personal identity, sexual pleasure, and knowing your sexual limits
  • knowing your sexual and reproductive rights
  • practicing safer sex

Expressing your sexuality in ways that promote your health and well-being, and respects others is an important part of your identity as a sexual being, regardless of your level of sexual activity.
