Tubal Ligation
A tubal ligation ("having your tubes tied") is a surgical procedure where your fallopian tubes (which carry the eggs from the ovaries to the uterus) are blocked so that you can’t get pregnant anymore. This procedure is done in a hospital under general anaesthetic (which means you will be asleep for the procedure).- Tubal ligation is 99.5% effective.
- It is considered a permanent procedure. You may consider having a tubal ligation if you are sure that you do not want children in the future. There is no guarantee that the procedure can be reversed if you change your mind at some point afterwards.
- Tubal ligation has the same risks as any surgical procedure.
- Tubal ligation does not protect against sexually transmitted infections.
- Tubal ligation is available at most hospitals. The cost may be covered by your provincial health insurance although this may differ from province to province.
