Trichomaniasis

français»

Trichomoniasis, also called "trich", is caused by a parasite that is most often transmitted from person to person through sexual contact. The parasite can also live up to 24 hours on wet clothing or towels, so it may be possible to pass it on by sharing these items.

Symptoms

Women may experience vaginal itching, new or unusual vaginal secretions, pain during urination or during sex. Men may experience a slight discharge, burning during urination, itching or redness at the top of the penis. Most men do not experience any symptoms and may pass it on to sexual partners without knowing they have it. Women may also be asymptomatic.

Women are tested for trichomoniasis by taking a swab of the vagina, and testing the sample. Men are not tested for this STI.

Treatment

Trichomoniasis can be treated with medication. If you and your sexual partner are treated at the same time, it will help ensure that the infection is not passed back and forth between you and your partner.

For more information on trichomoniasis contact your local health care practitioner, member of Canadian Federation for Sexual Health, sexual health clinic or Public Health Department.
