Mycoplasma Genitalium
Mycoplasma Genitalium is a new sexually transmitted infection (STI) that is caused by a bacterium and can be transmitted through unprotected anal, oral or vaginal sex or through sharing sex toys. Mycoplasma genitalium has been associated with certain complications which can arise if the STI is not detected and treated. These complications include pelvic inflammatory disease (an infection of the female reproductive organs which can lead to infertility if not treated in time), cervicitis and nongonococcal urethritis (NGU).
Treatment
Mycoplasma genitalium can be treated with specific antibiotics; however because STIs are often symptom-free, regular testing is important to ensure that serious complications do not arise.
For more information on mycoplasma genitalium contact your local health care practitioner, Canadian Federation for Sexual Health member, sexual health clinic or Public Health Department.
