Janssen-Ortho Inc. Volunteer of the Year Award
For over 10 years Janssen-Ortho Incorporated has sponsored the Volunteer of the Year Award. The recipient receives a plaque, a cheque for $1,000 and a mention at the Annual General Meeting as a reward for their outstanding efforts and contribution to the Federation.
2008 Winner
The winner of the 2008 Janssen-Ortho Volunteer Award was Sally Austin from the Sexual Health Centre for Cumberland County (SHCCC). Sally has been a dedicated volunteer with SHCCC for almost three decades. She has been involved in every aspect of the functioning of the organization including the Board of Directors, innovative program delivery, fundraising and staff support. She has demonstrated leadership, dedication and a willingness to take on any task – no matter how big or small. Her commitment to SHCCC and to sexual and reproductive health and rights in Canada embodies the true spirit of volunteerism.
2007 Winner
On behalf of the 2007 Janssen-Ortho / Canadian Federation for Sexual Health Volunteer of the Year Award Selection Committee, we are pleased to announce that Lindsay Falt, a volunteer at the Halifax Sexual Health Centre, has been selected to receive this year’s award.
Along with being a full-time University student who works part time and volunteers with young girls, Lindsay donated more than 230 hours to the Halifax Sexual Health Centre in the last year. She is described as having connected with clients in an empathetic and warm manner. Lindsay joined a health promotion working group, helped develop new resources, published a zine, trained new volunteers, and is planning an awareness event for Sexual and Reproductive Health Awareness Day.
2006 Winner
On behalf of the 2006 Janssen-Ortho / Canadian Federation for Sexual Health Volunteer of the Year Award Selection Committee, we are pleased to announce that Pascale Hough, a volunteer at Planned Parenthood Ottawa, has been selected to receive this year’s award. Pascale is a strong advocate in the sexual and reproductive health movement and passionate about the promotion of sexual health. She motivates, encourages and inspires those she works with and those she presents to. As a volunteer with PP Ottawa, Pascale is an Options Support Counsellor, provides presentations as part of the Community Education Program, trains newly hired volunteers and is an active member of the United Way Ottawa campaign as part of the Speaker’s Bureau, promoting Planned Parenthood Ottawa services and the importance of United Way funding for NGOs. She regularly presents in elementary, junior high and high schools, colleges and universities and community organizations. This is while also being employed full time.
2005 Winner
Canadian Federation for Sexual Health, in collaboration with Janssen-Ortho Inc., is pleased to announce that the winner of the Janssen-Ortho Volunteer Award 2006 is Betty Hunt.
A volunteer in the field of sexual and reproductive rights for over 30 years, the time and devotion that Betty has contributed to Canadian Federation for Sexual Health over the years has been invaluable.
Betty began working with advocacy groups in the 1960’s. Her motivation was to provide women with a safe and accepting environment to discuss their sexual health concerns.Betty is an extremely supportive and positive influence on our team, she motivates us through the work she is prepared to do.
2004 Winner
The Planned Parenthood Federation of Canada (PPFC), in collaboration with Janssen-Ortho Inc., is pleased to announce that Leslie Shaw, a long time volunteer with Planned Parenthood Metro Clinic in Halifax, has been selected as the 2004 Janssen-Ortho Inc. Volunteer of the Year.
A long time supporter of our movement, Leslie Shaw began her volunteer work as one fo the first Board members with the Family Planning Association of Nova Scotia (now PP Metro Clinic) in 1971 where she focused on operational and governance issues. Through her efforts, PFANS was successful in raising awareness of birth control options and legal abortion throughout Nova Scotia. During her most recent yeas with PPMC, Leslie has contributed a tremendous amount to the advancement of the Clinic and women’s sexual and reproductive rights. She is fully involved as an executive Board member and assists in governing the organization with compassion and wisdom. She is also a committed Clinic volunteer who gives a great deal of time each week to answer phones and perform office duties as needed. It can truly be said that Leslie has stayed firmly and enthusiastically behind our cause for over 30 years.
2003 Winner
The Planned Parenthood Federation of Canada (PPFC), in collaboration with Janssen-Ortho Inc., is pleased to announce that Sharon Froese, a long time volunteer and social justice activist with Planned Parenthood Cape Breton, has been selected as the 2003 Janssen-Ortho Inc. Volunteer of the Year.
The role of volunteers within the Planned Parenthood movement is a critical part of how we manage to do what we do. For their untiring and dedicated work, an annual award is presented to one of them as a small acknowledgement and thanks for the work they do. Ms. Froese has been involved as a volunteer since 1977 in various roles including PP Cape Breton Board president, Affiliate representative on the Planned Parenthood Nova Scotia Board and a representative on the Planned Parenthood Federation of Canada National Board. She has been instrumental in breaking down barriers to sexual and reproductive health services in Nova Scotia and is a long time proponent of equal access to services. In her paid employment as a CBC Radio program researcher and as a professor at the University College of Cape Breton, she has worked tirelessly in the face of public opposition to Planned Parenthood to ensure services and programs continued. On behalf of Janssen-Ortho and the entire Federation, we congratulate and thank Ms. Froese for her dedication, commitment and compassion.
2002 Winner
The Planned Parenthood Federation of Canada (PPFC), in collaboration with Janssen-Ortho Inc., is pleased to announce that Dr. Violet Shadd, a long time volunteer with Planned Parenthood Waterloo Region (PPWR), has been selected as the 2002 Janssen-Ortho Inc. Volunteer of the Year.
The role of volunteers within the Planned Parenthood movement is a critical part of how we manage to do what we do. For their untiring and dedicated work, an annual award is presented to one of them as a small acknowledgement and thanks for the work they do.
Dr. Shadd has been involved in many facets of Planned Parenthood Waterloo Region (PPWR) including sitting as a Board member and acting as a medical advisor in the counseling program. Dr. Shadd's commitment to women's sexual and reproductive health and the work of Planned Parenthood extends beyond her direct involvement with PP Waterloo Region. She has acted as a local advocate for choice in the medical community and is one of a team of physicians on call at Waterloo Region Sexual Assault Treatment Centre.
Planned Parenthood Waterloo Region is a charitable community organization that provides education, counselling and access to information in order to promote healthy and responsible sexuality throughout the life cycle.
2001 Winner
Teboho Mpela, from Planned Parenthood Toronto, is the 2001 recipient of the Volunteer of the Year Award. For over five years Teboho has volunteered in various capacities at PPT. She was motivated to do so by her own positive experiences as a client.
Teboho began volunteering while still in high school as a peer telephone counsellor. She then did face to face counselling with youth in PPT's Community Health Centre and co-facilitated anti-oppression training for volunteer counsellor trainees, all the while working to complete a B.A. at York University. In addition to her front line service she has also been involved in policy development and now serves as a board director.
PPT, in nominating Teboho, stated: " Her youthful vitality is infectious and her calm, thoughtful manner gives her wisdom beyond her years. Teboho's solid long standing commitment at PPT is an indication that she will always play a meaningful role in the movement for progressive change in reproductive and sexual rights."
Congratulations to Teboho Mpela. PPFC wishes her all the best as she begins work on a Masters Degree in Social Work at the University of Toronto.
2000 Winner
Ms. Patricia Williams from Planned Parenthood Manitoba / Sexuality Education Resource Centre (SERC) is the 2000 Volunteer of the Year. Over the past 24 years, Pat has volunteered her time and contributed greatly to SERC by serving as a member of the Board, Board president (1984-1986), Chair of numerous committees, member of SERC's annual sexuality conference committee and as an educator with SERC's Volunteer Speaker's Bureau.
Pat's other numerous contributions include lobbying the government for support and funding of SERC's Facts of Life 1-800 Line, developing core policy documents and facilitating over 250 workshops with over 5,000 individuals. Underlying all her efforts is her commitment to the right to sexuality information and education for all.
1999 Winner
Ms. Heni Nadel, from Ottawa is Volunteer of the Year, 1999. Heni first started with Planned Parenthood Ottawa-Carleton (PPOC) in 1979 and has played an active role as a volunteer Board member, a speaker, an options counsellor, a program developer and an educator.
For 20 years, Heni has made a significant impact on PPOC and the community of Ottawa-Carleton. Some of her work included helping to establish the English-language Theatre Program, initiating a new volunteer training program, and developing ideas for Teen Info Jeunesse Bus program.
1998 Winner
Hugh Cameron spent five years as a Board member for Planned Parenthood Waterloo Region (PPWR). During his time on the Board, he was instrumental in helping the agency design and find funding for a program called Parents for Healthy Sexuality. The program helps parents feel comfortable and knowledgeable in talking with their children about sexuality issues.
Hugh also began a values clarification workshop for volunteer trainees and has taken the volunteer training course in order to volunteer in the Education Program. Since the time of his training, Hugh has taken on the responsibility for ROOF, the agency's program to help street-involved youth. He is committed to promoting healthy sexuality and reproductive choice and rights. He has also contributed financially to the work at PPWR.
1997 Winner
Kathie Siriunas won this award in 1997 for her contribution at Planned Parenthood of Toronto (PPT). Kathie has been a volunteer there since September 1994, when she started PPT's sexual health counsellor training course. She was placed at the Bay Centre for Birth Control in December 1994, after finishing the three-month course. By 1997, she had put in over 800 counselling hours.
The position of volunteer health counsellor demands knowledge of basic biology, reproductive and sexual health issues, counselling skills, and relevant social issues. Counsellors make a commitment to challenge their attitudes and values and to counsel in a non-judgemental and inclusive manner.
