HIV Integration Position Statement
Canadian Federation for Sexual Health (CFSH) believes that the formal acknowledgement of the role of HIV/AIDS prevention and its integration into sexual and reproductive health promotion, education and clinical intervention programs and services will have a positive long term impact in reducing new HIV/AIDS infections.
The integration of HIV/AIDS and sexual and reproductive health in Canada will be optimized when:
- Sexual health education is comprehensive and addresses HIV and STI prevention as part of the maintenance of overall sexual health.
-
Comprehensive HIV and STI prevention is included in all Canadian sexual and reproductive health programs and services including education and counseling, and is available to everyone at:
- Family planning clinics
- Hospitals and other community health care facilities
- Physicians’ offices and specialists’ offices
- Sexual and reproductive health clinics
- Stakeholders such as funders, policymakers and the federal government recognize that HIV prevention is an integral part of sexual and reproductive health promotion, education and clinical intervention.
- Public health messaging to the public regarding HIV/AIDS is consistent, integrated within the context of sexual and reproductive health, and targets all populations in Canada.
- There is a reduction in new HIV/AIDS infections.
- HIV/AIDS and STI prevention programs and services work together to identify and combat/eliminate the stigma that prevents individuals from seeking help or treatment.
