Sexual & Reproductive Health Day 2009

The Canadian Federation for Sexual Health has prepared the following resources for use by service providers and educators to promote sexual and reproductive health in their communities.

A Brief History Lesson in Contraception

Preventing conception was illegal in Canada from 1892 until 1969. This brief 2-page history charts some of the key events that lead to Canadians having the right to protect themselves from pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections without engaging in criminal behaviour! The history handout complements the following 1969 video from CBC.

In June 1969, Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau and his Liberal government legalize all forms of contraception. Video footage from the Program "The Day It Is", hosted by Barbara Frum, originally broadcast on June 16, 1969, features guests Aileen Hall (Director of Planned Parenthood of Toronto), Mary Sue McCarthy (mother of seven) and Ralph Cowan (former Liberal MP), debating the morality of providing contraception information to women and teens.
