No Choice: Canadian Women Tell their Stories of Illegal Abortion

When women had no choice, they used any means necessary to procure an abortion. This is a book of deep, dark secrets. In it, Canadian women tell the stories of their illegal abortions - abortions which took place thirty, forty, fifty, sixty, even seventy years ago. These are stories told by mothers, single women, rape victims, medical personnel, orphaned children. They tell of illegal operations taking place on kitchen tables and in sleazy hotel rooms, or self-induced on bathroom floors. They are powerful accounts of physical and mental anguish, disturbing to remember and painful to tell. The fact that abortion was illegal did not deter these women from pursuing one. Their stories help us to understand why they did what they did and teach us about the extremes to which women will go to end their pregnancies when they perceive themselves or their families under threat. They tell us that we must never return to the times when women risked their lives to get an abortion. (ed. Childbirth by Choice, 1998, 162 pages).

 Tales of Contraception cover
Tales of Contraception

This book is a testimony to the millions of people, who, throughout the ages, have doggedly pursued the right to control their own fertility. It is about a unique museum that evolved by chance and the rare artifacts that are found within it. It's about history and medicine and human ingenuity, all with the commmon bond of contraception. There have been many books published on the subject of contraception. Few, however, have provided insight into the motives and myths of contraceptive practices and the misuse that continues even to this day. The book documents the evolution of contraceptive methods including condoms, intracervical devices, intrauterine devices, cervical caps, pills, potions, plants, superstitious beliefs and others. This award winning book also features incredible photographs of devices from across the ages. (Author: Percy Skuy, 1995).

The Right to Reproductive Choice: A Study in International Law

The Right to Reproductive Choice discusses the right to reproductive choice under international law and argues that the right to reproductive choice is the combined effect of a number of rights under international law including the right to choose the number and spacing of children and the right to marry and found a family.  The book thoroughly analyses the Convention on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women in relation to reproductive choice and looks at some of the reservations countries have made in regards to it, including governmental policies on population control and challenges from religious groups.  The book considers some of the most flagrant violations of the right to reproductive choice, such as forced sterilization   There is also a section on practical ways of achieving the right to reproductive choice, such as through certain international treaty monitoring committees.  (Author: Corinne A.A. Packer, 1996, 213 pages)
