Single Canadian adults not using condoms
September 10, 2009
The Sex Information and Education Council of Canada and Statistics Canada released a report on September 9, 2009 on condom use at last sexual intercourse among unmarried, not living common-law 20- to 34-year-old Canadian young adults. The study found that as individuals age their use of condoms decreased; younger sexually active single adults were more likely to use condoms than older sexually active single adults. Furthermore location and age at first intercourse also played a role in condom use. Rural women, as well as individual’s whose age at first intercourse was 13 or younger, were significantly less likely to report using a condom at last intercourse. Overall, the results of this study indicate that large numbers of single adult Canadians are at an elevated risk for sexually transmitted infections including HIV/AIDS.
