Canadian Government Will Not Provide Abortion Funding as Part of G8 Maternal Health Initiative

May 7, 2010

On Monday, April 26, 2010, the Canadian government announced that it would not be funding abortion services as part of the G8 Maternal and Child Health Initiative.  The Government had previously announced that it would not provide international aid funding for access to family planning methods, but has since decided that it will, in fact, fund access to contraception for women in developing countries as part of the Initiative.  Early in 2010, the Conservative government announced that Canada would champion maternal and child health in developing countries, in the context of hosting the G8 meetings in 2010.  G8 talks are set to be held in Ontario’s Muskoka region in June of 2010.
