History of CFSH

français»

For over 40 years the Canadian Federation for Sexual Health (CFSH) has worked nationally and internationally to promote universal access to reliable information and services, enabling individuals to make informed decisions related to their sexual and reproductive health.

CFSH was established as a network of family planning associations in 1964, a time when birth control was not yet legal and issues regarding sexual and reproductive health were largely shrouded in secrecy.

In 1974 the name Planned Parenthood Federation of Canada (PPFC) was adopted and PPFC joined the International Planned Parenthood Federation.

To more accurately reflect our mission and to speak to new generations, PPFC became the Canadian Federation for Sexual Health in October 2005.

Through the years CFSH has worked closely with its member organizations, forming an eminent national network and advocacy voice for sexual and reproductive health.

While great strides in advancing sexual and reproductive health have been made during CFSH’s 40 year history, its work continues to be imperative as people continue to be denied access to sexual and reproductive health education and services because of their age, ethnicity, sexual orientation and geography or due to economic or anti-choice barriers.

Since its establishment, CFSH has been a leading advocate and recognized authority on sexual and reproductive health, promoting universal access to reliable information and services and its recognition as a fundamental human right.
